God's Grace
All of God's grace in one sweet little face!
After much prayer & discussion, Chris & I decided to induce labor a few days earlier than the estimated due date. So, on Thursday night, January 29th, we checked into Arcadia Methodist Hospital. In addition to myself & Chris, my mom and my friend, Rachel, was also there.
Even though, Chris and I felt that we made the right decision, there were still times that I felt anxious and nervous and scared. But each & every time, we would keep praying, because we knew we could depend on God to help us & comfort & strengthen us, no matter how the labor & delivery would turn out.
Once I settled in, I was given Pitocin to induce regular contractions. When morning came, we discovered that my water bag must have developed a small tear, because there was evidence of amniotic fluid. Dr. Aldahl decided to completely break my water bag to further augment my labor. At that time, we found out that there was meconium present in the amniotic fluid, which meant that Baby Nicole had already poo poo’ed while in my tummy! This was a concern for all of us, because that meant there was a chance that baby could swallow that substance and cause some damage to herself.
Chris & I immediately prayed for Nicole's health & safety and entrusted her into God’s hands. We also thanked God, because we realized that we were already in the best place to receive help. The medical staff went to work right away, using some saline water to flush out the meconium-stained amniotic fluid to decrease the risk of harm to baby.
So, after about 20 hours of labor, Nicole arrived safe & sound into this world on Friday, January 30th, 2004 at 4:08pm! She weighed 7 lbs, 5oz, and was measured at 19½ inches long! We praise God that everything went smoothly after the meconium was flushed out. I decided to use an epidural for pain management, and was able to push baby out in about an hour’s time. Once baby was out, the neonatal team whisked her away immediately to suction her mouth & nose and make sure she had no problems breathing. Nicole rewarded us with a hearty wail to announce that she was fine!
Oh Baby Nicole, Daddy got to hold you first. And then, it was my turn. When I held you in my arms for the first time, I still could hardly believe that you were finally here. You were beautiful and absolutely perfect. We named you Nicole Amanda Kwan. And that’s the story of your Birth Day.
The first time ever I saw your face...
I thought the sun rose in your eyes...
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave...
To the dark and the empty skies, my love.

Checking in at Arcadia Methodist Hospital...
Getting settled into my hospital bed...
I couldn't have done it without Chris' love and support...we prayed together throughout the night, asking for God's blessings upon us. I am also tremendously grateful for the love and support of my mom and my friend, Rachel. Words cannot express my gratitude for what all my family and friends have done for me throughout my pregnancy and now in my time of labor.
